IMPORTANCE FOR TEACHERS

WHY IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT FOR TEACHERS TO KNOW ABOUT?

"70 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds said they had bought, copied or downloaded unauthorized music, TV shows or movies."

(Smith, 2012)

Internet Piracy is becoming very popular amongst youth and it is important for teachers to be aware of the relevance of this issue.  As highlighted in previous pages of this website, downloading prated material from the internet is completely illegal.  As re-stated by this video, it's just like stealing material objects.  Because of the amount of young adults and youth that participate in downloading pirated material, teachers need to provide lessons to youth about this issue and how they can avoid it.

In an American Study by Whitney Gunter, George Higgins, and Roberta Gealt (2012) they found that "the prevalence of piracy for 8th grade students indicates that 52.2 percent have pirated in their lifetime, 44.0 percent have pirated in the past year, 35.1 percent have pirated in the past month, and 16.1 percent pirate daily. For 11th grade students, those numbers increase dramatically. Specifically, 72.3 percent have pirated in their lifetime, 63.8 percent have pirated in the past year, 52.8 percent have pirated in the past month, and 25.0 percent pirate daily."  This further proves the importance for teacher's to teach students about this issue and how to avoid pirated material.  (Gunter, Higgins and Gealt, 2012)

What to do....

Education is the name of the game when it comes to preventing students from participating in piracy.  It is important that students are to learn the consequences of downloading pirated material, how to recognize pirated material and importance of purchasing authentic material. (Piracy/Plagiarism, n.d.)(What to tell your kids, n.d.)  Bellow are some example resources teachers can use to educate themselves and their students.
